Each year, we ask ourselves as an organization the following questions: What impact have we had on the individuals and community we serve? And how can we do our work better?
The economic climate and looming statewide budget cuts made 2009 a year of uncertainty for many nonprofits. Despite these stresses, we continued to provide the high quality of housing we are known for, to create positive change in the City of Newburgh and to share our message with an increasingly broad audience.
In 2009 Safe Harbors continued to serve as an anchor for downtown Newburgh; a cultural destination for the performing and visual arts that simultaneously provides the highest quality supportive housing and encourages neighboring commercial enterprises. Our tenants continued re-building their lives, returning to work after long absences, going to school, and volunteering in the building and in the community. We created several new partnerships with other nonprofit organizations and in the private sector as well.
In 2009 we began to plan for a project that will house families in a mixeduse building. We also investigated innovative ways to make our commercial spaces become a vital part of the City of Newburgh’s economic renaissance.
Through this annual report, we hope that you will get to know us a little better. These pages feature those who are committed to our mission, those who benefit from our mission and the resulting good work we do in the community. We are proud of what we accomplished in 2009 and look forward to expanding our mission in 2010.
