Hi, Cher:
Sorry I didn't get in on this earlier. Just trying to recover from a month-long
virus that has kept me low.
Memories of the Ritz when I worked as a cashier for Allen Levy, son of Gene:
I was also an usherette at the Broadway Theater, both under the Paramount
flag. All of the stage shows were played at the Ritz, but we usherettes from
the Broadway would march down to the Ritz in our uniforms and help the audiences find seats. No seats were reserved.
I remember seeing Dinah Show come into the back entrance one rainy night in a head scarf. I really didn't recognize her. She, of course, was not dressed or made up and seemed a lot shorter than I thought.
Her show was terrific! Lots of interplay with the audience and one gown had
a wide skirt with round mirrors all over it which reflected in the audience's
eyes. She was a big hit, and had several changes of wardrobe. I did sketches
of all her gowns.
"Johnny One-Note" was the song a young tossled-hair Mel Torme opened with by sliding the full length of the stage. He sure was cute and had the audience in the palm of his hands.
All the big bands were tried out in Newburgh at the Ritz. Stan Kenton had the
habit of taking chances with the melody of a song and creating a dissonance I didn't like at all. I had a short conversation with him one night and he just explained it was a new form of jazz, kid!
Charlie Barnett's band was a favorite and came back more than once. I also saw
him and his band in the early sixties on Canal Street in New Orleans where we all were having an early morning breakfast.
I had one Paramount talent scout ask about Peggy Lee's wardrobe. She had only one gown, a black satin two-piece slit up the leg for all of her performances.
That didn't seem to sit well with him. We were aware that the Ritz was the try-out venue for the big Paramount Theatre in New York City. I wondered if she
made it to the Big City.
I worked at both theaters while I was in high school and after, until I went
into the NY Bell Telephone office as an operator. I sure miss those days at
the Ritz Theatre. It was so elegant compared to the multi-screens of today.
But then, the movies of our day were so much more entertaining than what
we have today. You could escape completely in the big, lavish MGM musicals.
Time marches on.
Thanks to all those working on this project and the Restoration of Newburgh.
